Wage (gross)
Wage (gross) 1 500 – 2 000 EUR/month. According to Act no. 553/2003 Z.z. wage consists of two components: contractual wage based on the years of experience is 723.50 EUR + personal evaluation. The final salary depends on the experience and abilities of the candidate and can range from 1500 to 2000.- Eur.

Job description, responsibilities and duties

We are looking for a new colleague who will be a part of our hardworking and friendly team at the National Competence Center for High-Performance Computing. Junior HPC Systems Administrator will work with HPC systems opereted by COO SAS.

As part of the High-Performance Computing Department, you will be involved in HPC systems administration, technical support, and user service development, such as:

  • Configure, install, manage, and update the HPC infrastructure (including components such as the network, storage, and backup subsystems) and the environment (including application equipment).
  • Monitoring of HPC infrastructure and functionality of provided services.
  • Collaboration on projects to improve functionality in areas such as monitoring, planning and managing HPC resources, configuration and backup.
  • Design and implementation of enhancements to existing HPC systems management tools and processes.
  • Benchmarking of computing, storage and network technologies of HPC systems.
  • Design and implementation of new tools / improvements to existing HPC systems management tools and processes.
  • User support.
  • Development and maintenance of internal technical and user documentation and operating procedures and standards, "best practice guides".

Candidates’ education suitable for the position:
University education (Master's degree) / Postgraduate (Doctorate)

University degree in

Computer Science, Mathematics, Science (Physics, Theoretical chemistry) or related disciplines.

Potrebné znalosti

  • Advanced knowledge of Linux operating system (CentOS, RedHat, Ubuntu, …).
  • Advanced knowledge of network infrastructure and experience with configuration, maintenance and monitoring (including technologies such as IP, NAT, VLAN, VPN,…).
  • Advanced knowledge of scripting / programming in Python, Bash, Perl.
  • Ability to locate, quantify, analyze and solve complex problems of HPC infrastructure, determine the root cause, find a solution and develop preventive measures.
  • Ability to locate, quantify, analyze and solve complex HPC environment problems (eg user and system environment settings, compilation problems).
  • Adequate written and oral communication skills when interacting with partners / customers, and team members.
  • The ability to anticipate and prevent potential problems., so schopnosťou predvídať a predchádzať potenciálnym problémom.
  • Ability to self-study and learn new IT technologies related to HPC.
  • Knowledge of verbal and written English.

Skills should be demonstrated by work experience or output from projects (e.g. diploma thesis / dissertation), hackathons and contributions to open-source development, etc.


The candidate should demonstrate experience in the field that he / she could have acquired during his / her studies.

Other recommended knowledge and skills are welcome:

  • Knowledge of HPC infrastructure technologies, including servers, accelerators, data storage, networks, databases and virtualization.
  • Experience with configuring, managing and optimizing large Linux clusters and servers (e.g. xCat).
  • Experience with configuration, management and optimization of distributed and parallel file systems (e.g. Lustre, GPFS, NFS, Ceph, BeeGFS, …).
  • Experience with configuration, management and optimization of high-performance networks (eg RoCE Ethernet, Infiniband).
  • Experience with installing and using system configuration management tools and orchestration tools such as Puppet, Ansible, Chef, Cobbler, Kubernetes.
  • Experience with installation and configuration of system administration and monitoring tools (e.g. Ganglia, Nagios, Icinga, Prometheus, Zabbix).
  • Experience with installation and use of general scientific libraries and tools (e.g. LAMMPS, FFTW, NAMD, R, MATLAB,…)
  • Experience with installing and using tools for managing computing resources (e.g. Slurm, Moab, Torque,…).
  • Experience with installation and use of parallel and multi-process interfaces (e.g. OpenACC, MPI, OpenMP).
  • Experience with installing and using software configuration and build tools (CMake, Make, Autotools).
