Research project: Use of wave energy for the third generation WEC

Research project: Use of wave energy for the third generation WEC

On February 2nd, an online presentation of the research project Use of wave energy for the third generation WEC (Wave energy converter) took place in the premises of the Computing Centre of the Slovak Academy of Sciences. The hybrid event was organized by niore Energy s.r.o. and the National Competence Centre for High Performance Computing.

Company niore Energy s.r.o. is focused on the production and storage of clean energy. Experts from niore Energy s.r.o. are plan to become part of the world's electrical grid solution and contribute to global goals by turning ocean waves into electricity and utilizing water for energy storage. This patent-pending concept is based on a floating ring on the ocean's surface. This ring enables the transformation of oscillating motion into rotary motion, which is the motion that generates the most electricity efficiently. The bigger the diameter of the ring, the more sturdy it is against ocean waves, and the more energy we can collect from a broader surface area. Energy Storage, which is also a rotating device floating on the ocean's surface, will serve as the cornerstone for the storage of clean energy, by converting extra electricity into kinetic energy. You can find more information about Energy HUB technologies HEREDuring the presentation of this research project, M. Novák also gave a demonstration of their technology.

Research project Use of wave energy for the third generation WEC is supported by Norwegian grants and the state budget of the Slovak republic.

Devana Is Already “Home” in the Sas Computing Centre

Devana Is Already “Home” in the Sas Computing Centre

On the 10th and 11th of November, the physical installation of the new Devana HPC system is taking place on the premises of the Slovak Academy of Sciences at Bratislava's Patrónka. Slovak users had to wait for a long time for a replacement of Aurel, the first Slovak supercomputer.

The so-called phasing, i.e. the renewal of the HPC infrastructure so that the life cycles of at least 2 systems overlap, is a common tool for ensuring the continuous availability of adequate computing resources for users. In Slovakia, however, since 2014, when the Aurel supercomputer was expanded, a significant investment debt has arisen in this area. Aurel, which has been shut down since April 2021, will be replaced by Devana, which we want to make available before the end of the year.

You can find a comparison of Aurel and Devana parameters in this year's issue HPC Focus.

Who will be able to use Devana supercomputer?

Scientists and researchers from Slovak universities and SAS institutes will be able to apply for free access, computing capacity will be allocated to individual projects in a grant competition with peer-review assessment.

There is an offer of cooperation with the National Competence Center for HPC available especially for small and medium-sized enterprises and the possibility of implementing free pilot and proof-of-concept projects with the help of experts.

The computing resources will also be available commercially.

When will Devana be available to users?

Installation and thorough testing of the system will take place in the coming weeks. In December, we plan to launch the possibility of submitting the projects for testing and benchmarking. The first call for standard projects will be published early next year.

Collecting Marine Debris with HPC - ETP4HPC Webinar

Collecting Marine Debris with HPC - ETP4HPC Webinar

We bring to your attention a webinar organized by FF4EuroHPC and ETP4HPC  which will take place on Friday,  July 8 (11:00 am - 12:00 pm).  At the event two FF4EuroHPC success stories, focused on environmental impact, will be presented, showcasing the implementation of the HPC & AI technologies for business. The webinar will be really interesting for researcher, HPC providers, software developers and most important, business oriented companies.

The FF4EuroHPC project gives European SMEs the opportunity to use European high-end HPC services to develop innovative products or solutions. The two FF4EuroHPC open calls target high-quality experiments involving innovative, agile SMEs. Each experiment is an end-user-relevant case study demonstrating the use of Cloud-based HPC and the benefits it brings to the value chain from the end-user to the HPC-infrastructure provider.

This webinar will focus on two experiments related to environmental impact, which were both successfully concluded:

MARINE LITTER HUNTER – HPC-Based navigation system for an autonomous marine litter-hunting project

Emanuele Della Volpe, CEO and Aerospace Engineer at Green Tech Solution will introduce the Marine Litter Hunter experiment to the participants. Green Tech Solution (GTS) has automated the collection of marine litter thought real-time identification of floating plastic debris on the sea via unmanned vehicles that send GPS coordinates to an unmanned vessel, through a ground control station, which reaches and collects the plastic waste, without the intervention of operators.

The limited ability to predict the future position of the debris is limiting the efficiency of the entire system as the time and energy consumption of collection increases significantly. The HPC experiment allow us to drive into the next phase the collaboration of the unmanned systems for:

  • Marine Litter Recognition
  • Marine Litter Path Prediction
  • Marine Litter Recovery strategy Optimization

HERCULES – weather forecast for drone operation

Project Hercules will be presented by Jose L. Munoz Gamarra, echnical Director at Aslogic. The HERCULES project develops specific weather forecast models for drones, as due to their size they are much more vulnerable to adverse wind flight conditions. In this project, we have developed an approach independent of ground infrastructures.
